WordPress Customization

Make the WordPress site you already own work the way you want

We work inside the site you already have — the theme, the plugins, the layout and the store behind it — so it looks right, loads fast and stops resisting you every time you edit a page. No new platform, no starting over, and none of the content or search visibility you have built up so far thrown away.

What's included

Most engagements use some of these, not all of them. The audit decides which — you only pay for the parts your site actually needs.

Theme customization

Headers, footers, archive and single templates, typography, colours and spacing changed at the source instead of being patched with stacked custom CSS.

Child themes & safe overrides

Your changes live in a child theme or the theme's own override system — never in core or parent files — so a theme update does not quietly erase a month of work.

Plugin setup & configuration

Forms, booking, multilingual, caching, SEO and backup plugins installed, connected to the right accounts and configured properly — not left on default settings.

Plugin audit & cleanup

We list every active plugin, what it actually does on your site and what it costs to renew, then remove the abandoned, duplicated and unused ones that slow pages down.

WooCommerce stores

Products, variations, shipping zones, tax, order and stock emails, and a working local payment gateway — set up end to end and test-ordered before you go live.

Speed optimization

Caching, image compression, unused script and font removal, database cleanup and hosting-level fixes — measured with the same tool before and after so the change is visible.

How we work

Every WordPress engagement runs the same way, whether it is one template fix or a full store setup.

  1. Audit before we touch anything

We take read-only access and go through the theme, every active plugin, the hosting plan and the current page speed. You get a plain-language summary of what is slowing the site down and what is risky, before any work is quoted.

  2. Backup and a staging copy

A full backup and rollback point is taken, then your site is cloned to a staging environment. Every change is made and reviewed there, so your live site keeps running and selling while we work.

  3. Theme and layout work

Template and design changes go into a child theme or the theme's supported override system, so WordPress and theme updates apply cleanly afterwards. If a layout needs a page builder to be untangled first, we say so rather than stacking another workaround on top.

  4. Plugins, store and speed

The plugin stack gets trimmed and reconfigured, WooCommerce is set up or repaired where that is in scope, and then the speed pass runs on what is left. Speed work comes last on purpose — there is no point optimising code you are about to delete.

  5. Review, launch and handover

You review the staging site on desktop and phone and we fix what you flag, then the changes go live at a time that suits your traffic. Afterwards you get a short written handover of what changed and how to keep it that way.

Who this is for

If one of these sounds like your site, customization is usually the faster and cheaper route.

The site that fights every edit

You bought a theme, the demo looked perfect, and now moving one section breaks two others. Every small change needs a developer because nothing is where the documentation says it is.

The store that was never finished

An e-commerce store where products went up but shipping zones, tax, stock emails and the payment gateway were half-configured — so orders arrive incomplete and customers call you to confirm they paid.

The site that is slow on mobile data

A business site that opens fine on office wifi and crawls on a phone outside it — sliders, four font families and a dozen plugins loading on a page that only needed to say what you sell.

The site nobody dares update

WordPress, the theme and the plugins have not been updated in years because the last update broke the homepage. It works today, and everyone is quietly hoping it keeps working.

And when we would tell you not to do this

If the theme has been abandoned by its developer, if a dozen overlapping plugins are the only thing holding the site up, or if every small change keeps costing more than the last one, then customizing is money spent working around a foundation that will not improve. In those cases a rebuild is cheaper over a year and we will say so before you spend anything. We have written up how to make that call in WordPress or a custom website.

What you get

Everything below is handed over in writing, not explained once on a call and forgotten.

  • A written audit of your theme, plugin stack, hosting and current page speed — with what we recommend and why
  • A full backup and rollback point taken before any work starts, kept until you sign off
  • A staging copy of your site where every change is built and reviewed before it reaches the live site
  • A child theme or update-safe setup so your customizations survive theme and WordPress updates
  • A plugin list showing what stays, what was removed, what replaced it and what each one costs to renew
  • WooCommerce configured end to end where it is in scope — products, shipping, tax, order emails and a tested payment gateway
  • Before-and-after speed test results from the same tool, on the same pages, so the difference is checked and not claimed
  • A short handover note in plain language: what changed, what to avoid, and how to update the site safely

Questions worth asking first

Can you work on a WordPress site your team didn't build?

Yes — working inside a site someone else built is the normal shape of this service. We start with read-only access, review the theme, the plugin stack and the hosting, and tell you what we found before anything is changed. If the previous developer left something risky behind, you hear about it in plain language first.

Will my customizations survive theme and WordPress updates?

That is exactly why the work goes into a child theme or the theme's own override system instead of core files. Updates then apply cleanly and your changes stay where they are. Where a plugin genuinely cannot be updated safely, we tell you and lay out the options rather than leaving it to break silently.

How long before the site actually feels faster?

Caching, image compression and removing scripts nobody uses normally show up in the first pass, and we test the same pages with the same tool before and after so you can see the difference yourself. Deeper problems — a theme that loads three sliders and a page builder on every single page — take longer, because fixing them means rebuilding templates. After the audit we will tell you which of the two you have.

Do I have to buy premium themes or plugins?

Only where a free option genuinely cannot do the job, and we tell you before you spend anything. Licenses are bought in your name and stay in your account, not ours, so you keep control if you ever work with another developer. We also flag renewal dates and costs up front so nothing expires quietly.

When is customizing the wrong call?

When the theme has been abandoned by its developer, when a dozen overlapping plugins are holding the site together, or when every small change costs more than it should. At that point you are paying repeatedly to work around a foundation that will not improve, and a rebuild is the cheaper answer over the year. We will say so instead of billing the hours.

Will I lose my content or my Google rankings?

The work happens on a staging copy, so your content is never edited live. URLs, page titles and internal links stay as they are unless we agree to change them, and where a URL genuinely has to move we set up a redirect so the old address still lands somewhere sensible. Rankings move for many reasons, so we will not promise you a position — we will make sure we do not break what is already working.
